House. Comm. on the Judiciary. Act to more effectively suppress riots, 1835
|

House No. 17 The Committee on the Judiciary reported a bill: An Act more effectually to suppress riots and to indemnify persons for injuries done
thereby, 1835. Twelve people with dangerous weapons or thirty people behaving tumultuously were a riot. Each jurisdiction was to respond swiftly;
the Sheriff and his deputies were to tell the people to cease and desist. If the rioters refused, then they were to be seized and the lawmen could call
on anyone to help. If the sheriff had to use deadly force, he could not be held to account, but if the rioters hurt a lawman, they were liable to
criminal charges. Towns were supposed to pay for property damage and injuries. If the town had made every effort to defuse the situation, but failed,
it could appeal to the Governor to be reimbursed for those payments. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts
