SEE ALSO 52694 Senate No. 57 On March 5, 1835, the Committee on the Judiciary reported a bill: An Act in addition to an act relating to parishes and religious freedom, 1835. Whenever a religious organization had to take down pews, then it was governed by the fifth section of the statutes of 1817, but if the building was unfit for services, the statutes did not apply. Ordered, that the Committee on the Judiciary inquire into the expediency of providing by law for a uniform mode of indemnifying the owners of pews in any meeting-house in this commonwealth, when the same shall have been taken down, altered or removed, by an parish or religious society to which the same belongs.
