Senate. Comm. on Railways and Canals. Act to establish the Charlestown Branch Rail-road Corporation, 1835
Senate No. 44 On March 7, 1835, the Committee on Rail-ways and Canals considered a petition and remonstrance about a branch railroad in Charlestown
and reported a bill: An Act to establish the Charlestown Branch Rail-road Corporation, 1835. Three men were incorporated as above to locate,
construct, and complete a railroad from Swett's Wharf to the Boston & Lowell Railroad in East Cambridge. There were very specific instructions for the route
and over/under crossings. The usual corporate rights and responsibilities and the usual property instructions were included. There were at least
two draw bridges involved, and the new route was to mesh seamlessly with the Boston & Lowell Railroad. No engine could go faster than 3 miles per/hour!
The project had to be completed by 1838 and the state could buy the railroad after twenty years. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title
originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
