Senate No. 37 On January 15, 1835, the Committee on Railways and Canals was asked to see if provisions were necessary to protect travelers where
streets were crossed by railroads. On February 28, 1835, the Committee reported a bill: An Act in addition to an act for defining the rights and duties
of railroad corporations in certain cases, 1835. There were two technical amendments, followed by the requirement for each locomotive to have a 50
pound bell that would be rung before each crossing and would continue to ring until the entire train had passed the location, but that did not apply to
horse-drawn railroads. The companies were to put up a sign on each side of the track warning the public to look for trains. Town Selectmen could
ask companies to put staffed gates at some crossings. There were fines for non-compliance. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held
