SEE ALSO 52522 Senate No. 4 Copies relating to the Massachusetts claim: In 1828, the Secretary of War said the claim amounted to $848,000+. In 1830, an appropriation was made to pay $431,000. Massachusetts then asked for the remainder, but the Secretary said the appropriation was used up. Congress directed the Secretary to consider the Miscellaneous accounts and report back. The Secretary sent directions to the 3d Auditor, but no copies of his directions were forthcoming. One big issue was the cost of rations and who should pay. Pennsylvania and Virginia had the same issue. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
