House. Special Comm. on Defective Roads. Act to enlarge the powers of County Commissioners, 1834

House No. 34 On January 28 and 31, a committee was constituted to consider whether failing roads and bridges, indeed all roads, should be the
responsibility of County Commissioners. On February 3, 1834, the committee reported a bill: An Act to enlarge the powers and duties of County
Commissioners, 1834. When a County Commission was notified of a defective road or bridge, they were to notify the jurisdiction of said road and arrange to visit
the road or bridge. If necessary, the Commissioners would tell the local jurisdiction to fix the problem. If it did not, the County Commissioners
were to fix it and sue the jurisdiction for the costs. If a private road were defective, and the request to repair it was ignored, no toll could be
charged until repairs were made. Roads were no longer to be the purview of the Court of Common Pleas; they probably weren't sorry. (Digitized from a
