Senate. Comm. on the Judiciary. Act limiting powers of county commissioners, 1834
|
|
Senate No. 58 On March 3, 1834, the Committee on the Judiciary was to consider providing checks on the acts of County Commissioners, to provide for the auditing of their accounts, and to allow the Selectmen of Nantucket to function as Commissioners for Nantucket County. On March 13, 1834, the Committee reported a bill: An Act limiting the powers of County Commissioners and providing for the settlement of their accounts, 1834. If the County Commissioners agreed to a new road, the decision could be challenged at the next regular meeting and a jury called. If the jury felt the road was not necessary, then it would not be built. The County Treasurer was to audit the Commissioners' accounts before they received any pay for service and the records were to be maintained by the Treasurer. [Nantucket was not mentioned.] (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
