Senate No. 43 On February 24, 1834, the Committee on the Judiciary reported a bill: An Act to enable the proprietors of the Middlesex Canal to
collect tolls, 1834. The master of a boat using the canal had to provide ownership information, travel details, a bill of lading, and a record of cargo
weights; tolls were usually charged by weight. If the master refused to provide the information, he could be fined. If the toll collector were
suspicious about the weight of the cargo, he could detain the boat and have it unloaded and the cargo weighed. The cost of this was borne by whomever had
