Senate No. 31 On January 20, 1834, the Committee on Parishes and Religious Societies was asked to consider amending the law to conform to the new
Constitutional amendment on freedom of religion. On February 13, 1834, the Committee on the Judiciary offered a bill: An Act relating to parishes and
religious freedom, 1834. A person could choose a parish or religious society and if qualified, be a member. The person could be taxed to support
that organization only--no other. A group that wanted to organize as a religious society could ask the local Justice of the Peace to call an
organizational meeting so the group could be officially recognized in the local jurisdiction's records. Various religious holidays were repealed. (Digitized

Ordered, that the Committee on Parishes and Religious Societies, be directed to inquire into the expediency of altering or amending the laws relative to parishes and religious societies, so as to conform them to the recent amendment of the Constitution.
