Senate No. 21 On January 31, 1834, the Committee on Matters on Probate and Chancery, having considered the Governor's message, reported a bill: An
Act concerning arrest and imprisonment in civil actions, 1834. Any person arrested in a civil action could give bond for twice the amount of damages
and would have ninety days to pay the judgment, etc. before going to jail. The poor debtor's oath was also an option. (Digitized from a microfilm
copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
Title:   The Committee on matters on Probate and Chancery, to whom was referred so much of His Excellency the Governor's address, as relates to the subject of imprisonment in civil actions, have duly considered the subject, and ask leave to report a bill.
