Joint Select Comm. on the State of the Currency. Report, 1834
Senate No. 20 Report of the Joint Select Committee on the state of the currency and the removal of deposites [sic] from the Bank of the United
States. Boston : Dutton & Wentworth, 1834. On January 24, shall the Legislature express an opinion on this topic? On February 1, 1834, the Committee sent
several Resolves in relation to the currency and removal of the deposites of public money from the Bank of the United States: There was an alarming
financial crisis, so politics needed to be put aside to guide the Congressional representatives. It was absolutely essential that the circulating
medium be paper--specie was not practical. A national bank with branches around the country was the safest way to move currency around the country;
state banks could not do that easily. When the first national bank lapsed, confusion reigned. A well constructed national bank was an essential function
of government and the Massachusetts representatives in Washington should bend every effort to get it back. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title
originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
