House. Comm. on the Judiciary. Report on the memorial of R.G. Paige, 1833
|
|
House No. 64 On January 16, 1833, the Committee on the Judiciary considered a memorial to impeach Jeremiah Colgrove as a Justice of the Peace. Colgrove was alleged to be "corrupt and unprincipled in the administration of justice," and to have heard cases when drunk. A specific case was cited in which Colgrove was alleged to have altered a complaint. The Committee took depositions and heard witnesses, but concluded that the evidence was vague, the drunking charge had been withdrawn, and for the alteration charge, while serious, there were mitigating circumstances. The Committee declined to impeach. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
