House No. 23 On January 9, 1833, the Committee on Finance was directed to study the Governor's remarks on the sale of public lands and the expenses of the state prison. On February 3, 1833, the Committee submitted a report. It presented abbreviated financial statements for 1830, 1831, 1832, and January 1833. There was a deficit in the last instance of $165,000. The Committee suggested changing the use of the money from the sale of public lands to use the principal as necessary to balance the budget. Resolve: The Treasurer may borrow to meet the ordinary demands of the Commonwealth, not to exceed $225,000. An Act relating to the funds derived from the lands in the state of Maine, 1833. This repealed an 1831 law and said all money received from the land sales since 1831 could be applied to the ordinary expenses of government.
