SEE ALSO 52331, 52335, 52349 House No. 4 On January 7, 1833, the House asked the Senate for copies of the documents related to amending Article
III. On January 8, 1833, a committee of fourteen men considered the Article. Their report said public opinion was still in favor of the amendment and
in fact, society behaved as if it were fact. Resolved: follow the usual procedure for presenting Constitutional amendments to the public. The text
of a substitute amendment was next: Religious societies could elect their pastor and raise money for buildings and services. Members of a society
could stay or leave as they chose and would not be responsible for contracts at their previous assembly. All peaceful groups were protected by law and
no one group would ever, by law, dominate another. The House accepted the amendment on February 10 and the Senate on March 9, 1833. (Digitized from

Title:
On motion of Mr. Whittemore of Cambridge, it was ordered, that a message be sent to the Senate, requesting that body to transmit to this House, the amendment to the Constitution proposed and adopted by the last Legislature, in respect to the third article of the Bill of Rights, together with the accompanying papers, and Mr. Whittemore was charged with the said message.
