SEE ALSO 52327, 52391, 52419 Senate No. 49 Mr. Barton proposed an amendment for the second time as a complete re-write of the bill: An
amendment to the bill on arrests and imprisonment in civil cases, 1833. A debtor could give bond of twice the amount owed and remain free for sixty days. If
the debt had been satisfied during that time, s/he was free. If the debt was not satisfied, the debtor had to report to jail. The form of the
debtor's oath was included in which the debtor acknowledged the debt and promised to pay, but jail was always a possibility. (Digitized from a microfilm
