Senate No. 42 On March 6, 1833, the House Committee on Roads and Bridges, having held hearings, submitted a report and bills. Lexington and
Cambridge had asked to be relieved of the support of the Old, or Great, Bridge. Shifting populations and town boundaries meant the bridge was no longer
useful to either town. The Committee offered a history of the bridge and its communities and then offered the first bill: An Act to exempt the town
of West Cambridge from their liability to keep up and support their proportion of the Old Bridge, so called, over the Charles River between Cambridge
and Boston, 1833. The act repealed the requirement. In very similar language, the second act released the town of Lexington from liability for the
