Senate No. 31 On February 22, 1833, the Committee on Mercantile Affairs and Insurance submitted a bill: An Act for the prevention of frauds in the
sales of oils, 1833. There was a list of common oil names that had to be pure spermaceti oil. Oil that was adulterated with other substances had to
be sold as whale oil. There were penalties for sale without disclosure. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the

Title:   Ordered, that the Committee on Mercantile Affairs and Insurance, be and they are hereby directed to consider whether any, and if any, what provisions ought to be made by law, for the prevention of fraud in the sale of oils.
