Senate. Comm. on Maine Resolutions concerning Mass. Claims. Report, 1832
|
|
SEE ALSO 52264, 52267 Senate No. 36 On March 23, 1832, the Committee to whom was referred part of the Governor's message on documents received from Maine submitted a report. An earlier Act had settled that one third of the money received from the claim for militia expenses would go to Maine. Maine said this had not been done. The Committee pointed out that the Act of Separation said one third after expenses had been deducted, but that was not Maine's reading of the text. The Committee went on for seven pages, saying Massachusetts footed the bill for both states to badger the federal government for the money, so Maine should pay its share. The Committee pushed the issue to the next Legislature and asked the governor to send Maine a copy of its report. [The documents from Maine were not included in the report.] (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
