General Court. To amend the Art. 3 of the Mass. Bill of Rights, 1832

Senate No. 22 Resolved by both houses that the below article of amendment be voted on, held for the next General Court, and if approved, sent to the
people. Article of Amendment to the Third article of the Constitution, 1832. Any religious body had the right to elect or hire its pastor and other
leaders, and to raise money toward its goals. Any person could apply to be a member of a religious organization or choose to leave with due notice.
All religious organizations were equally part of the community; no one church would ever be elevated above another. On February 10, 1832, this
passed the House. The Committee on the Judiciary in the Senate reported on February 16, 1832, that the Constitution should only be changed for practical
reason or to correct an evil and it was not necessary or expedient to pass this Article. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by
