Senate No. 14 Report of the Committee on petition of the President and Fellows of Harvard College. The text of the petition said Harvard had an
extremely valuable library and map collection that was in a hopelessly inadequate building at great risk from fire. The College did not have the funds
to build a new space, hence this petition for a grant. On January 27, 1832, the petition was sent to a committee that was also considering a petition
from Amherst College. The Joint Special Committee reported on February 8, 1832. The library had over 40,000 volumes, plus rare maps and charts. The
Committee laid out a history of the library and the map collection. Not only was the present building too small, but it was not built to stand the
weight of the collection. A very nearby dormitory was often the sight of fires, endangering the library. Harvard's financials were presented to show
there was no money available for a new building. Resolve: on the petition of the President and Fellows of Harvard College, 1832. The treasurer will
send $2,500 each April and October for the next eight years to fund a new library building. [In 2021, Harvard had by far the largest endowment of any
