House No. 29 A Select Committee of thirteen men reported An Act in addition to the several acts defining the general powers and duties and
regulating the office of Sheriff, 1831. The Governor was to appoint each county's Sheriff for a term of five years, who served at the pleasure of the
Governor. The Sheriff was to make an annual report of monies received and to get a similar report from his deputies every six months. The Sheriff was allowed
25% of whatever fees the deputies received and was entitled to a long list of other fees. In addition, the Sheriff received some money for the care
of prisoners. There was a list of Sheriffs' salaries by county. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State
