House. Comm. on the Judiciary. Act mitigating penalties in certain cases, 1831
House No. 16 The Committee on the Judiciary proposed An Act mitigating the penalties in certain cases for the crimes of arson, burglary, and
larceny, 1831. If an arsonist can prove the building he burned was uninhabited, the usual sentence is changed to hard labor for life. For burglary and/or
breaking and entering, the penalty is up to twenty years hard labor. For robbery or larceny, the court may use its own judgment and the offender goes
to jail, not prison. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
