Senate. Amendments to an act to protect the sepulchres of the dead, 1831
|
|
Senate No. 29 The changes made by the House of Representatives were in italics. An Act more effectually to protect the sepulchres of the dead and to legalize the study of anatomy in certain cases, 1831. If anyone not licensed by the seven listed agencies dug up human remains, that person had committed a felony, and was liable to hard labor and several years in jail. The seven agencies listed could surrender bodies that were to be buried at public expense to licensed physicians [preference given to medical schools] for anatomical study. Relatives had thirty-six hours to claim a body. The school or physician receiving a body had to give a performance bond and had to give the remains a decent burial when instruction was completed. February 11, 1831 (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
