SEE ALSO 51801 Senate No. 16 The Committee that examined the Governor's message and several petitions about imprisonment for debt reported a bill
on February 2, 1831. An Act for the relief of unfortunate debtors and the protection of creditors, 1831. No person could be arrested for a debt of
less than $30. No female could be arrested for debt. No property could be attached unless the creditor got a certificate from a magistrate and
creditors could get certificates for flight risks. Creditors could call for a hearing if the debt was more than $30 and assets were alleged to be concealed.
If the debtor failed to appear, he was liable to arrest. A judgment of under $30 never carried an arrest threat. (Digitized from a microfilm copy
