House. Act authorizing construction of a canal from Northampton to the north line of this Commonwealth, 1828
SEE ALSO 51966 H.R. No. 42 An Act to authorize the Hampshire and Hampden Canal Company to construct a canal from Northampton to northern line of
this Commonwealth, 1828. The Company could select the route, build the canal and associated buildings, could use water from other streams and build
reservoirs. It had to pay for properties acquired and pay damages [many pages were devoted to this]. It could levy tolls on boats, passengers, and
cargo, followed by a list of tolls, harmonized with those elsewhere on the network. It could make rules for use of the canal, provided they were posted.
Penalties for vandalism of the works were listed. The local counties were to be informed of all activity. The company was to keep everything in good
repair. It could not interfere with the smooth workings of the Upper Locks and Canal Company or impinge on its charter. The two companies had to
negotiate payments for loss of business by Upper Locks ..., if such occurred. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
Massachusetts State Library).
