Board of Commissioners of Internal Improvement. Route for a canal from Boston to the Blackston Canal, 1828
SEE ALSO 51849 Senate No. 8 Report of the Board of Commissioners of Internal Improvements in relation to the examination of a route for a canal
from Boston to the Blackstone Canal and thence to the line of Connecticut. Boston : Dutton & Wentworth, printers for the State, 1828. 1000 copies were
printed. The report was submitted to the Governor on February 6, 1828. The Governor sent the report and a message to the Legislature. It appeared
that the canal could be built without impinging on businesses along the Chickopee River. The Commissioners had less complete data on the Charles River
to Blackstone Canal, but it would continue to research the issue. The Commission determined there were several ponds that could hold winter run-off
to provide water during the summer to maintain the level of the Chickopee. The Commissioners described the potential route of the canal and extolled
its trade benefits. There had to be additional studies to determine if the Charles River canal was really feasible. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of
title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
