SEE ALSO 51915 Senate No. 5 Report of the Board of Commissioners for the survey of one or more routes for a railway from Boston to Albany. Boston : Dutton & Wentworth, printers to the State, 1828. 1500 copies were printed. On January 29, 1828, the Governor sent the report to the Legislature with some brief notes: the survey was hindered by weather and was not complete. The group surveyed a southern and northern route crossing the Connecticut River at Springfield and Northampton respectively. There is a fairly careful survey from West Springfield to Albany showing the summit 1440' above the Connecticut and 1477' above the Hudson. The route can be set up to be 80'of elevation per mile, which two horses could do. The report began on p. 9. The Commissioners had to do lots of preparation for the survey and had almost too much help from the locals. P. 10-12 covered the southern route, while p. 12 was for the northern route. They also considered several feeder routes. Ending the northern route at Troy, NY seemed like a worthwhile idea. P. 18-19 were tables of inclination from W. Springfield to the Summit, and p. 20-22 were the same tables for the Summit down to the Hudson. Pages 24-32 discussed the physics of friction, inclination, and the pulling power of the horse. The Commissioners did not have enough data to do cost estimates, so they filled several pages about the canals and railroads of Great Britain. They thought building costs were much higher in Britain. There was another longish discussion of trade potential when there was better transportation. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
