Davis, Amendment to act on extension of the Hampshire and Hampden Canal, 1827
|

SEE ALSO 51887, 51896, 51898 H.R. No. 67 Mr. Davis moved the following amendment be inserted after section 1, 1827 that replaced most of the
authorizing bill. Three Commissioners were to be selected to supervise the operation of the canal company. These outside commissioners were to survey
potential routes, assess damage claims, not the commissioners of the canal company. Tolls were to be computed by weight of goods and distance traveled and
were to be no higher than tolls on the Erie Canal. the company had to build and maintain access to the Connecticut River at Northampton and could
not interfere with others use of adjacent waterways. The company could not collect tolls until the entire canal was built. The company had to maintain
all equipment in good repair and have lock attendants available both morning and evening. The water had to be at an unnamed constant depth. The
company had to pay for any loss of profit on the Connecticut River canal north of Northampton. A further amendment by a different legislator required the
canal be wide enough so tugs and barges could pass next to each other in the space. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
