House. Comm. on Finance. Report, 1827
|
|
H.R. No. 59 The Committee on Finance studied the imposition of assessments on estate inventories and submitted a report and a bill. In 1824, the Legislature did away with probate fees and went to straight salary for the probate courts without identifying a revenue source for that expense. The report included tables showing the amounts of estate values and how a graduated assessment could yield about $10,000 a year. There were other tables with more detail. On p. 6 An Act in addition to an act entitled an act to regulate the jurisdiction and proceedings of the Courts of Probate, 1827. There was a list of graduated estate values with equally graduated assessments from $1 up to $50 based on the estate inventory. Survivors had three months to submit the inventory. The Court was authorized to charge twelve cents/page for copies of relevant documents. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
