House. Act to establish a free bridge over Charles River, 1827

SEE ALSO 51886 H.R. No. 58 An Act establishing a free bridge over Charles River between Boston and Charlestown, 1827. Five men were listed as the
Charles River Free Bridge Corporation, authorized to build a free bridge 40 feet wide with at least one draw. The corporation could build wharves near
the bridge, but had to compensate for any land taken. There was to be no toll for bridge or draw passage and someone had to be available twenty-four
hours to staff the draw. Suffolk and Middlesex counties were responsible for maintenance of the span. An amendment: If the owners of the Charles
River Bridge would turn over their bridge to the Commonwealth within sixty days, this act would have no effect and no bridge would be built between
Charles Bridge and the Canal Bridge until 1832. There would continue to be a small toll for maintenance of the bridge. (Digitized from a microfilm copy
