Description and Holding Information
House. Act allowing extension of the Hampshire and Hampden Canal, 1827
SEE ALSO 51876 H.R. No. 53 An Act to authorize the Hampshire and Hampden Canal Company to extend a canal from Northampton to the northern line of
this Commonwealth, 1827. The Company was authorized to locate, construct, and complete locks, tow paths, basins, wharves, etc. continuing with the
duties and responsibilities of the original corporation. One Commissioner was to be a resident of Franklin County. Reports were to be published in
local newspapers. On p. 4 began a copy of the original incorporating act. Eleven men formed the corporation with the usual powers and privileges of a
corporation and able to hold real estate to a value of $300,000. The route was from Northampton to Westfield, using ponds, streams, and reservoirs.
The corporation had to buy land it needed and pay for damages to property. It could charge tolls for use of the canal and facilities, set rules for
same, and publish the rules. It was to build bridges over the canal. It could sell shares for $100 each; once one thousand shares were sold, work could
begin. Shareholders were to organize a Board of Directors. The corporation could never assess shareholders for more money. No taxes would be
charged for eight years. The corporation had ten years to build the canal. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts
