House. Act incorporating the Boston and Salem Stage Company, 1827
H.R. No.44 An Act to incorporate the Boston and Salem Stage Company, 1827. Eleven people were authorized as a corporation for conveying passengers
to and from Boston and Salem. The usual corporate duties and responsibilities applied. Every January, the corporation had to report to the Secretary
of the Commonwealth as to the state of the business. If the company made more than a 12% return for a year, the Legislature could require lower fares
or could take the excess of 12% for the state! An early example of the excess profits tax. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally
held by the Massachusetts State Library).
