Senate. Act to establish the Warren Bridge Corporation, 1827
|

SEE ALSO 51827 On March 10, 1827, the clerk ordered the Warren Bridge bill and the Governor's message about it and the votes of each house on the
Bridge bill all be printed together. The Act to establish the Warren Bridge Corporation named five men to form the corporation that had the authority
to build a free bridge from the wharf in Charlestown to the Mill Creek fill, with wharves and piers. The bridge passage and draws were always to be
free of tolls. However, if the current toll bridge were turned over to the City of Boston to operate as a free bridge, the new bridge would not be
built until 1830. The Senate passed the bill on March 8, 1827 and the House passed it on March 9, 1827. The document shows the roll call in each case.
On March 10, beginning on p. 10, the Governor returned his veto message, which went on until p. 25. He pointed out that the old bridge would lose all
its revenue when the new bridge opened. By contract, the owners of the old bridge would have to maintain and service the traffic on the bridge with
no means to pay for upkeep and salaries. That corporation had been guaranteed the income for tolls for a period of years, so this Act broke the
contract. How essential was the new bridge if the corporation was willing to wait three years before starting the new one? In response, the Senate voted
against the Warren Bridge, but the House still voted yes. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State
