Senate No. 15 A committee from both houses received petitions from both Amherst and Williams Colleges for more funds. In six years, Amherst had
jumped from 56 students to 200, which meant they needed another dormitory. The school's financials indicated they lived hand to mouth, with no way to
pay down debt or build funds for improvements. The school wanted to modernize its curriculum and also set up a teachers' college. It wanted $42,000.
Williams College had considerable funds at its disposal, but much of the money was earmarked. It had lost about 40 students from its rolls. Williams
wanted $40,000 for operating expenses. The committee hinted that the schools should merge and said the state had to focus its funds on "common
schools," [public school system] and gave Williams and Amherst leave to withdraw their petitions. The Senate received the report on February 8, 1827.
