Senate. Comm. on Sale of Liquor Licenses. Report and bill, 1827
|

Senate No. 10 On January 8, 1827 a Committee was created to consider the sale of liquor licenses. The Committee submitted An Act to provide for the
sale at auction of licenses to the retailers of spiritous liquors, 1827. The selectmen of each Town, in March or April of each year, could decide
the number of licenses that were appropriate for their town and a cost or starting bid for same. With at least ten days' notice, persons who were
deemed fit by the selectmen, could bid or buy 1 license per person. [Fitness was not defined.] The money went to the support of the poor. The County
Court was to be notified of the names of the licensees. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).

Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in Senate, January 8, 1827 : ordered, that Messrs. Burnell, Peirce, and Sears, be a committee to consider the expediency of making further provision by law for the sale of licenses to retailers of spirituous liquors, with leave to report by bill or otherwise.
