House. Comm. on Statement of the Prison Warden. Report, 1826
|

On January 20, 1826 the House Committee on the Statement of the Warden of the State Prison made its report. Prison expenses were in order except for
payments made to the stone works overseer. Besides his regular salary, this person derived income from contracts he made for dressed stone and other
stone products. The Committee pointed out that only the warden was allowed to make contracts for the prison and that the overseer made more money
than any other state official! The Committee reported that playing cards and occasionally alcohol was found at the prison and since prison was for
punishment, not entertainment, the keepers should try harder to prevent contraband from coming over the walls. The Committee recommended a salary increase
of $100 for the Warden and $50 for the keepers. [This volume was donated to LLMC to enrich its on-line offerings and for purposes of long-term
