General Court. Comm. on Tenn. and Vt. Communications. Report, 1826
|
|
Sometime after January 20, 1826, the Committee constituted to look at the amendments to the U. S. Constitution offered by Tennessee and Vermont made its report. The Committee said it was inexpedient to accept either amendment. Vermont wanted to abolish slavery. Tennessee wanted to abolish the electoral college in favor of direct vote for President and vice President. Each state was to be divided into voting districts which were good for ten years. The Vice President and a group of U.S. Senators would count the votes; there were procedures for ties or very close numbers. The Committee went on for 17 pages before rejecting the amendment with a Resolve: Alterations to the United States Constitution proposed by Tennessee are disapproved.
