SEE ALSO 51686, 51704, 51715 Sherman Leland was in charge of an 1824 legislative committee to consider the application of Amherst Academy to become
Amherst College. Williams College objected to the competition. Each school was similar in finances, faculty, student body, and buildings. Amherst
was more convenient for the western part of the state. The committee recommended approval of the application. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of
