Description and Holding Information
General Court. Act amending the Act on religious freedom, 1824 [version 2]
SEE ALSO 51679. This is version 2 of the amendment to the Act for Public Worship and Religious Freedom. [See 51679 for version 1] No one could be
taxed to support a Society of which s/he was not a member. A person was free to leave one Society in favor of another, but s/he must notify the
previous society and pay anything owed. When one moves to a new Town, that person has until May 1 to declare membership in some organization. If no
declaration is made, it is assumed, for tax purposes, the person belongs to the oldest Religious Society of the Town. Any Religious Society needed to be
organized with officers and especially a clerk. It was the clerk's responsibility to maintain an accurate list of members and show it to the clerk of
any other Society who wanted to see it. Refusal to do so meant a fine. All previous laws on the subject were repealed. (Digitized from a microfilm
copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
