Joint Comm. on Harvard & Williams College Appropriations. Report on Williams College, 1824
This Joint Committee of the House and Senate was to monitor the spending of appropriations given to Harvard and Williams Colleges. This February 5,
1824 report covered Williams College only. The College received $28,500; it spent $3,000 to repair buildings, improve library collections, and buy
laboratory apparatus. The remainder was loaned in three parts. The interest from the loans supported a professor of languages, reduced the tuition of
several students, and did put some money into the general fund. The Committee noted that loaning the money out was not the original intent of the
grant, but it appeared to have been a good idea that had worked well. The College was still entitled to $1,500 because the original grant had been for
$30,000. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
