Description and Holding Information
Comm. on Petition of Trustees of E. Hopkins. Report on tenant's taxes, 1824
SEE ALSO 51687, 51717. The trustees of E. Hopkins charity owned a substantial amount of land that was rented to tenants for a small quit-rent.
However, the State of Massachusetts decided these tenants should pay taxes to the state as if they owned the land they rented. The tenants asked the state
to be freed from paying quit-rent in addition to taxes, so this document cements the arrangement of the tenants paying state taxes, but the
government will then pay the quit-rent from those taxes to the charity's Board of Trustees on March 25th every year. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title
originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
