Jt. Sel. Comm. on Deaf and Dumb Institute. Report, 1850
|
|
1850 Joint Select Committee regarding the present condition of the Institute for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb. After visiting the location, the committee was favorably impressed with the education and atmosphere, although it felt that better accommodations were needed for the vocational training. The committee also indicated the terms in which the school would be willing to educate the blind in the state, which were similar for the other students. Of note, a large portion of the report concerned the incomplete construction of a new building, now occupied by the students and the interpretation of the construction contract. After much discussion, the committee recommended that the Board of Directors of the Institution be authorized to determine if the contract had been complete, as the contractors asserted that the board did not have that power. Finally, the committee recommended the continued level of appropriations. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the Library of Congress).
