SEE ALSO 52566, 52591 House No. 7 "Memorial for an act to render Masonic and extrajudicial oaths penal and in aid of the memorial for a full investigation into Freemasonry and the repeal of the charter granted to the Grand Lodge." This document was created by 64 citizens of Gloucester. The citizens had very little knowledge of the specifics of Freemason oaths or ceremonies, but feared they might require initiates to do civil or moral harm. There were thousands of Masons around the world; they might work together to influence or even topple governments. Non-judicial oaths were generally forbidden in common law, so Massachusetts should have a law against such oaths. Etc., etc. There was no mention of what got these people so excited. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
