Hillebrand, Flora of the Hawaiian Islands, 1888
Flora of the Hawaiian Islands; A description of the phanerogams and vascular cryptogams: by William Hillebrand, annotated and published after the
author’s death by W.F. Hillebrand, xcvi+673p + 4 maps, London, etc., Williams & Norgate, etc., 1888, all published. (William Hillebrand, born in
Westphalia in 1821, was educated in major German universities as a physician. Ill health forced him to seek the more salubrious climes of the Pacific, and he
arrived in Hawaii in 1861. Over the next twenty years he served in many responsible public positions, including being chief physician at the Queen’s
Hospital, a member of the Board of Health, a member of the Privy Council and personal physician to King Kamehameha V. In addition, Hillebrand had a
serious interest in botany, which led him to become a leading figure in the Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society. In 1865 and 1866, while serving as
Commissioner of Immigration for the Hawaiian Government, he visited to China and the East Indies, where he collected many plants and birds for introduction
to Hawaii. Hillebrand left the Islands in 1871, and this book was completed in manuscript shortly before his death in 1886.)
