and fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, in addition to the four influential essays reprinted in this work, was the author of Christianity as Old as
the Creation, 1730, which was widely termed “the deist’s bible,” the aim of which was to eliminate the supernatural element from religion, and to prove
that its morality is its only claim to reverence by mankind.)
