|
Maritime Warfare: 2ed, by Thomas Gibson Bowles, iv+119p, London, W. Ridgeway, 1878.(Lacks TOC & index. This review of the maritime laws of search and seizure of enemy property at sea also provides a spirited defense of the ancient practice of privateering. The appendices, pp. 106-119, provide some valuable documentation on privateering commissions and letters of marque. The work comes from a somewhat unlikely source. Bowles, 1841-1922, was primarily a journalist and publisher, who among other accomplishments was the founder in 1868 of the British Vanity Fair, and was its editor for its first two decades. During the years 1892-1906, and in 1910, he served as a Member of Parliament. However, he was also an enthusiastic sailor, and an avid supporter of the Royal Navy. This text is but one he wrote in that cause.)
