Mullalla, Compilation on the Slave Trade, 1792
A compilation on the slave trade, respectfully addressed to the people of Ireland: by James Mullalla, Dublin, pr. by William McKenzie, 1792. (Lacks
TOC & index. Mullalla, a native of India, here pens a fervent anti-slavery tract. On p. 25 he echoes, without attribution, Abbe Raynal’s famous plea in
his, L'Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes for a Black Spartacus; the passage
widely seen as foretelling the rise of Toussasint Louverture of Haiti: There are so many indications of the impending storm, and the Negroes only want a
chief, suffi-ciently courageous, to lead them on to vengeance and slaughter. Where is this great man, whom nature owes to her afflicted, oppressed,
and tormented children? Where is he? He will appear, do not doubt it. He will shew himself and will raise the sacred standard of liberty. This venerable
leader will gather around him his companions in misfortune. More impetuous than torrents, they will leave everywhere ineffaceable traces of their
just anger. Spaniards, Portuguese, English, French, Dutch ¬¬- all of these tyrants will become the victims of fire and sword. The plains of America will
get drunk on the blood which they have so long expected, and the bones of so many wretches, heaped up during the course of many centuries, will bound
for joy. The Old World will join its plaudits to those of the New. The name of the hero who shall have restored the rights of the human species will
be blest everywhere; everywhere statues will be erected to his glory. Then will the Code Noir be abolished. But the Code Blanc that succeeds it will be
terrible, if the victors consult only the law of revenge!” {Geneva, 1780, v.3, pp. 204-205}. The print text of this title was scanned from Lincoln’s
Inn Library pamphlet volume Carlton 3, foliated pagination 8A to 23B.)
