Description and Holding Information
Colonial Laws & Foreign Laws, Commentaries on, Burge, 1907-
Burge's Commentaries on Colonial and Foreign Laws; Generally and in their conflict with each other and the law of England, New Edition: gen. ed.
Alexander Wood Renton, and George G. Phillimore, 4 vols. in 5 books, London, Sweet and Maxwell, 1907–28. (This Renton edition amounted to a massive
reworking and updating of the original work by Burge. It was initially intended to extend to five volumes, as indicated on the title pages of Vols. 1-2.
However, the title pages of Vols. 3 & 4–Pt.1, publ. 1910 & 1914, indicate an intent to expand the endeavor to six volumes. As it developed, the
publication of Vol. 4-Pt.II, edited by Renton and Wyndham A. Bewes, was delayed until 1928, and nothing further came of the project. Thus, as compared to the
original 1838 ed. of Burge, the Renton edition provides no update for Burge’s Vol. 4, which principally covers the topic “succession.” In addition to
their main publication as part of the New Edition, Vols. 1 & 3 of the New Edition also were published separately under different titles: Vol. 1 as
Colonial Law and Courts and Vol. 3 as The Comparative Law of Marriage and Divorce. Although it appears from the title page of Vol. 3 that a total of six
separate books were contemplated, the last book issued was Vol. 4–Pt.II, for a total of five books.)
