Carnatic Case, Resume & Catechism, 1855-64?
The Carnatic case, resume and catechism: n.a., varied pagination, s.n., s.l., 1801? (Lacks TOC & index. In this famous case, Prince Azeem Jah, the
legitimate heir to the Nabob of the Carnatic was deprived by officials of the British East India Company of his turn to assume the throne upon the death
of a relative in 1855. The Carnatic coast is the region of South India lying between the Eastern Ghats and the Coromondel Coast. Its extent included
the modern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, south eastern Karnataka, north eastern Kerala, and southern Andhra Pradesh; i.e., ca. 8-10% of modern India’s
land area. In its ongoing competition with the French East India Company, the British Company had long sought to annex the Carnatic to their then
seminal Province of Madras. However, its overreach on the occasion of Azeem Jah’s opportunity for succession offended, not only the native population, but
also many old “India hands.” The latter remembered that the ancestors of the Prince had rendered valiant service to the British over the previous
century. They thus considered the Company’s actions in the succession dispute to be dishonorable. In legal doctrine the theoretical importance of this
case rests upon the proposition that the matter in dispute involved “political property,” which is governed by international law, rather than “private
property,” which is governed by municipal law. Despite the notoriety of the case, which extended even to debates in the British Parliament, in the end
the Company’s position prevailed and the whole of the Carnatic was absorbed into the Madras Presidency. The present work is an assemblage, of
undetermined vintage, of many separate publications relative to the case. Because of the many separate paginations employed, navigation is difficult. Thus
users may find it useful to cite to the imposed pagination added when this item was incorporated into the Lincoln’s Inn pamphlet collection. The print
text of this title was scanned from Lincoln’s Inn Library pamphlet volume MP 14.)
