Bahrain became a British protectorate in 1861.Prior to 1957 the “mother country” was represented on the ground by a Political Adviser, who reported to the British Political Resident for the who had responsibility for all British dependencies in the Gulf. The Advisorate became a Secretariat in 1957, when the British representative was restyled Secretary to the Government. Bahrain was declared fully independent on 14 August 1970. This document records part of the process whereby the U.K. ceased to treat Bahrain as a sort of quasi-protectorate and recognized that future relations would involve dealing with an independent country.
